The Golden Rule
Is it the Poet or the Fool
Who asks which is the rule
Most golden? Neither nor.
It is the Artist's task to cull
The truth, and show it to all
Beholden.
Nothing is greater
Than a promise kept;
And nothing is kept,
But a later promise.
To create anew and celebrate, too,
The few moments left for leisure;
Those gifts of Happy pleasure--
The sweet days of living,
While giving up the soul...
These moments are precious and few,
Between God and you,
And all that I have said is true,
If you believe.
Who asks which is the rule
Most golden? Neither nor.
It is the Artist's task to cull
The truth, and show it to all
Beholden.
Nothing is greater
Than a promise kept;
And nothing is kept,
But a later promise.
To create anew and celebrate, too,
The few moments left for leisure;
Those gifts of Happy pleasure--
The sweet days of living,
While giving up the soul...
These moments are precious and few,
Between God and you,
And all that I have said is true,
If you believe.
